Victoria Martial Arts (VMA) gym is located in the heart of Victoria. We pride ourselves in hosting a clean, fully equipped, open space for you to train like a champion. All our classes are co-ed and suitable for ages 12 and up. We offer structured boxing and kickboxing classes for all skill levels and we also offer strength/conditioning classes for those looking for an extra challenge. VMA members enjoy training in a fun exciting atmosphere and we happily welcome everyone, from the beginner who is just starting out to the elite members of our competitive fight team. Please note that we are not a cardio kickboxing/boxing gym. The techniques we teach are real skills and are practical for both self defense and competitive kickboxing/boxing. You will learn technique, breaking down the sequence of every strike and movement. Instructors remain close by for any assistance you may need and we provide our trainees with all the concepts and tools they require throughout their journey. For students who are new to the sport who would like to try our gym we offer an INTRODUCTORY MEMBERSHIP. Our Introductory Membership gives you three 1 hour private training sessions with North American Kickboxing Champion/Head Coach Robert Doerksen and 30 days of training in our group classes including kickboxing, boxing, conditioning and open mat times (please refer to schedule). After your 30 day trial, you will have the option of becoming a member for which there are a variety of pricing options available (please refer to pricing). At VMA we have a flexible training program that suits everyone. We offer classes six days a week so you can take your skills to a whole new level with a regular and strenuous training regimen. Our members are allowed to attend unlimited amount of classes per week (relative to their skill level). If you are just starting at our gym and don’t have your own gear then we can gladly lend you some. However, if you are taking classes regularly then you will be expected to purchase your own training equipment. For our classes you will need hand wraps, boxing gloves and shin protection (for kickboxing). We have supplies available for purchase or we can refer you to our distributor if needed.
Our gym comes equipped with a FULL SIZE BOXING RING for us to use and practice our trade. Time is frequently allotted for sparring at the end of our classes and during open gym times for those wishing to compete or challenge themselves. Coaches will be there to support and guide you to your first sparring session (sparring optional). Progressing to full contact sparring is a very gradual process at VMA and is closely monitored by qualified personnel. We start by covering punch defenses, footwork, and hand positioning with very light contact. We gradually teach you how to increase your speed and power while maintaining a defensive guard. Our students are friendly while sparring and demonstrate a high level of control with their technique and power. You might work your way up to full contact sparring but you will always have the option of sparring lightly with your partner or the option of not sparring at all. If you do choose to participate in sparring, you must have your own mouth guard, hand wraps, cup, headgear, shin protection, and 16 oz. boxing gloves for safety.
Our classes are taught with a high level of proficiency and safety, by coaches who have high-quality technical knowledge and first-hand experience in the martial arts world. We share a passionate enthusiasm for health and sports performance. Our instructors are eager to pass on our knowledge of martial arts movement/techniques and we really enjoy developing systematic programs that transform people rapidly. Our friendly instructors have the ability to motivate and encourage students as they progress through their training to challenge themselves on a daily basis—mentally, spiritually and physically.
Kickboxing is a stand-up combat sport based on kicking and punching, historically developed from karate, Muay Thai, Taekwondo, and Western boxing. Kickboxing is practiced for self-defense, general fitness, or as a contact sport. Kickboxing can be considered a hybrid martial art formed from a combination of elements of various traditional styles. Kickboxing training has been proven to be a full body workout that will help anyone get in great shape, attain physical fitness and lose weight. However, although getting fit is a very real side effect of our training it is not the main focus during classes (aside from cardio conditioning class). Our programs will help you build lean muscle and develop outstanding conditioning through challenging drills, combinations, and pad work. Classes are physically demanding and designed to improve cardio respiratory health, overall fitness and concentration. Kickboxing classes incorporate a variety of exercises, making them an ideal workout for those who are easily bored by more repetitive and monotonous forms of exercise. We practice a variety of kicks and punches that will improve balance and increase flexibility. In short, our kickboxing program will help you develop outstanding Dutch style kickboxing technique, increase your strength and get you in phenomenal physical shape.
Boxing classes at VMA!!! This class is suitable for everyone no matter what your skill or fitness level. We happily welcome everyone from beginner boxers looking for the basics and a great workout, to the competitive boxers looking to sharpen their skills through proper training and practice. Our qualified boxing coaches will take you through all the footwork drills, punch combinations and single shots plus their counter defensives. If you have ever dreamed of becoming a world champion boxer or looking for a new hobby that will complement your fitness goals, VMA can take you there. Our boxing development Program produces Champions, it’s as simple as that. Sparring and competitive opportunities are available in both disciplines.
